fireworks and blood

Go crazy and fall asleep
The fair was fun. I went with friends instead of family for the first time and it was interesting. The fun factor was dragged down a little by going with people who planned to came back on another day and I couldn't, but whatever. The taiko drummers were excellent, hopefully I got some good pictures of them, and Target really went that extra mile to win over Alaskan's hearts. Target had pinwheels at the gates, gave out gigantic lollipops during the day(they are so heavy you can use them for clubs), and poured money into the fireworks display. The fireworks were 3D, they handed out special glasses during the evening, and was the most amazing display I've seen in person. There hasn't been fireworks even close to that nice at the fair since 2000(2001 was lame due to budget and ever year after thanks for fuckin' homeland security. Because giant cabbages are so threatened by terrorists.) It was a good thing I fought to stay in the fairgrounds because, for the first time I can remember, they shot the fireworks off over the ballfield instead of the bmx track, the difference between those two locations being one huge barn and a bit of forest. We had a perfect view because mom saved us a seat along the side of the barn, right behind the speakers that were playing the synchronized music(at one point they used 'Can-Can'.)

Okay, new paragraph. That one's getting long and unreadable. This was the most expensive fireworks display the fair has ever had and wow, it shows. <3 Minnesota. It took forever to get out of the parking lot due to Wasilla AND Anchorage being routed the same direction after first going past the Red Gate. We pretended we were Palmer just to out of there faster. It was after midnight by the time we got home(the fireworks being over at 10:30-ish). I hurt so much I had trouble getting to sleep.

My dogs woke me up 5AM-ish for a potty run, then thankfully stay quiet until I woke up. I flitted between gaming, reading and movie watching for awhile before settling in to play some more Twilight Princess - I'm up to the Arbiter's Grounds. Though as soon as I'm done with this entry I'm going to watch a dvd.

Rita and Sophie got into it today. Sophie has a habit of taking cheap shots when she thinks she can get away with it, that's a sheltie for you, and that's how she got in trouble with Chai. She nipped at Rita as Rita was leaving and Rita turned around and lit into Sophie. Unfortunately Sophie is too dumb to understand to back the hell off and kept going after Rita even while mom was holding Rita back. Meanwhile Rita has her teeth sunk into Sophie's ear. Dad gets in to help(I'm keeping the others dogs out of it) and we finally get the two of them apart. I haven't seen Sophie's ear, but I imagine it's punctured because of how tight Rita held on and all the twisting Sophie did. Rita got an injury to her nose that I didn't see real clearly, but she sprayed blood all over the kitchen floor trying to clear her nose. Fun and joy.

Tomorrow I'm going to stay with my Aunt for a few days while she recovers from eye surgery. Internet might be patchy.

Yesterday morning I had a dream, and this morning too. Kinda strange, especially considering today's was set in the world of a book I'm reading(Rebel Fey) and follows two relatively minor characters. That's about all I remember from it. It's unusual that they're sticking to me like this. I even wrote down the one from yesterday to disect at a later date.

I remembered to use the cut for once! )

Tomorrow, the fair! I got the message too late to call back. I'll be there tomorrow morning. ^^

Are you NaNo?
Heh, I'll take an early PFD check, no complaints. Especially if it's $3000, eh?

Got up early, walked the dog early, went to chiropractor, and then fred meyers. Chai embarressed me on the walk by whoo-whooing at the pastor. He seems to think I need protecting from an old man who walks with a cane. And the guy who owned Surrey's mom asked about her. He mistook Chai for Surrey, which is kind of silly. Cattledogs =/= Rottweiler/Bulldogs.

Starbuck's blended lemonade/green tea drink is awesome good.

I wonder what the Brazillian Vollyball women players think about playing with the word BRA written across their chests in six inch letters.

Last night I tried to get to bed early. Then, just like every time I tried to get to bed early in the past two months, the muse struck and I spent two hours writing. I have mixed feelings about this. On one hand, yay writing! On the other hand... sleep is needed. My body keeps telling me eight hours isn't enough. Groggy me is unhappy me.

Somehow I ended up rewatching most of the Zero Punctuation videos. Can't recommend them enough - their the only reason I look forward to the middle of the week. Is it Wednesday yet?

We still don't know what's wrong with mom's leg. She's just going to try and take it easy for awhile.

My laptop's mouse finally gave up the ghost so I got a new one today to Wal-Mart. It's depressing - after months they finally have Mario Kart for the Wii in and for the first time in that time frame I don't have the extra cash for it. On the upside I ended up getting a bunch of new notes and papery things. And a flash drive on a lanyard, which rocks in its own way. Want pens though, and I can't seem to find the kind I want.

Mom got a call from her Doctor today. She told her to go to the hospital. After going back and forth for awhile she decides to go. That's pretty big as in my family you don't go to the hospital unless it's damn important.

If we get to go to the fair this year or not depends on if she can walk or not. There's going to be Japanese drummers and uber fireworks on the 23rd, so I might talk them into going by myself. Though I might have to take Maybelle - I won't complain if she doesn't.

I'm watching a NatGeo program on pirates. They were describing the romantic appeal of pirates and
I went 'hey.... that sounds familiar.' So, basically, pirates = vampires. Chew on that, internet.

End of the World NaNo
In my opinion it is never too early to think about the next NaNoWriMo. I got the 'do you still want to be an ML?' email tonight. I'll answer it tomorrow when I can think clearer.

Settling into US History is painful. It's so boring and I can't shake the feeling that their not giving me the whole picture. History is written by the victors and all that. I'm just used to getting a more wide view of the history of something.

I couldn't sit still while I was working so I ended up riding my bike for awhile. Not I'm stiff and sore so that I can't decide if it was a good idea or not.

Well the good news is mom didn't have a blood clot in her leg. Bad news is that we don't know what is wrong. The doctor had her go off a few of her meds to see if they're the problem.

Watched Cloverfield and The Last Crusade Saturday evening with the writing group. Something about the combination of over exposed pale colors, flashing lights, and extremely shaky camera(plus the soda didn't help any) in Cloverfield made me so sick I actually had to excuse myself to throw up. I spent a lot of the movie hiding around the corner. Thankfully it's the kind of movie you don't need to see to follow. I actually enjoyed it, aside from it making me sick. And of course the Last Crusade is good. ;D Then We stayed up late talking about the train wreck that is Breaking Dawn. And Daughter of the Blood, which is lulz bad.

I slept in really late today. Out of a need to do something useful I finally sorted and put away most of my clothes, changed my bed sheets and moved Chai's crate back into my room. I'm going to turn in early and try to get back on more convenient hours.

Pouring Rain

  • Aug. 8th, 2008 at 3:32 PM
Let the rain fall
Wow. Today started off sunny and cool. Mary dropped off Surrey to be brushed and groomed - she's looking as old as ever, but healthy. I went to take a couple tests, so now I'm officially done with Mythology! Good riddance. I can't believe the class actually made me hate mythology.

There's with a bit of a drizzle on and off during the last test. I didn't think much of it until I got outside, turned around and saw the Storm Front(complete with pipe organ and chorus for full effect) coming in over the mountains. The thunder was pretty far away, but I still felt it. Thankfully we got home and inside before the storm really reached us.

About ten minutes ago the sky opened and it just poured. It poured down with thunderous rain and hail in a manner that brought to mind words like 'torrential'. After several minutes it lightened up into a soft rain, but now it looks like it's picking up again. I have a feeling this is going to be the trend for the rest of the day. Oooh, there goes some thunder.

Mom's at the Doctor's getting a sonogram. We think she has a blood clot in her leg that was either started by or made worse by the flights we took in June. Here's hoping for good news.

Let the rain fall
Just a few minutes ago the sky opened it and it's now pouring down hail. I haven't seen anything like this in a long time. Wow, just... wow. The sound of it starting was just this thunderous roar picking up outside.

Earlier today it hailed just a wee bit, and thundered some too.

*facepalm*
Well today turned out decidedly SNAFU. I get there to take a mythology test and tada, the final examination is placed in front of me. Out of the frying pan, into the sun's convection layer, eh? I start to panic, but then rationalize it out - they knew something I didn't, maybe mom discussed it with them and their letting me skip the tests in between? I stupidly trust that the people that are suppose to be handling this stuff know what their doing. I do the test. Two and a half hours later (about a half hour lost to panic), I finish the test and call mom to pick me up.

Turned out that the supervisor messed up and handed me the final exam when I had two more tests to do. Now I have to do them on Friday, and possibly I'll have to redo the final exam. Yay. GAH. Goes to show that you can never trust the people in charge. Though my WTF expression maybe should have clued him in? That and I was there for 'a test'? Whatever man, I regularly waste two hours all the time. *rolls eyes*

I just finished the middle section. Yeah, yeah - I'm behind. I'll finish by Saturday. Did the HATEHATEHATEHA-LOVELOVELOVELOVE thing give anyone else mental whiplash?

In an effort to cleanse my brain before diving into the last half of Breaking Dawn I finished Summer Knight. Decidedly my favorite Dresden Files book so far.

I ache... not all over. Just the inconvenient parts. I fell during the walk, just slipped on the edge of the pavement and fell to my knees. I skinned my knee and the impact did something to my wrist that I can feel from my palm all the way up to my elbow. That in addition to the deep bruise on my other knee from nearly two weeks ago and the near constant pain I'm been having in my hands. Heh, I'm a wreck. Yay for high pain tolerance.

Last night I couldn't sleep because I kept thinking about writing. I eventually gave up and reopened my laptop. I think I got more or less 1k last night. Very productive, even if I didn't sleep and didn't get a test done today. The upside is I might not have to do half my classes, thus finish early and get back to reading/gaming/etc!

Now I'm hungry again. I guess I should get a snack and then head to bed.

miles - 42, met up with the elves. Now in a hilly forest.

Chief Big Smoke is at it again. Glad I didn't have my windows open, otherwise I'd have probably ripped apart the smoke detector by now. I'm hungry, but mom promised dinner when she got back from the store so I wait. And drink tea.

The aftermath of the Breaking Dawn release is the most epic... thing ever. Equal parts Fail and Win. It beats Harry Potter by tenfold and simply blows my mind. It's no longer a train wreck... it's the freakin' Hindenburg! Shippers are united in outrage! Books are being returned! Godwin's Law invoked! And somehow I'm glad I was only at a small town Waldens. I wish I had had the courage to yell out random spoilers... except my unspoilered friends were there and I'm not that mean to people I like.

a weekend of books

Books
Friday evening mom drove me first to dinner, then to Waldens for the Breaking Dawn release. I arrived a ridiculous hour early and decided that I felt bad being the first one there. I wondered over to Carrs for a bit, then waited until Summer arrived. It was freaky seeing the Carrs' parking lot full of scary looking tweens in hot topic goth gear.

Bri arrived soon after and we all got our wrist bands of 'you can haz book'. I was 29th in line. As soon as the doors opened we went in and promptly shuffled to our sections. We wandered, we book-shopped, Bridget arrived, we got bored and went to Carrs, then came back in time for the debate. The we sided with Jacob; I made it to the semifinals, while Bri won. The woman who was running it later told me she thought I had a better argument. I made me feel good. Radar won the costume contest, I'll have pictures up as soon as flickr behaves.

There was a thing called Bella's Balance (*snerk*) where you had to walk a straight line with a hardcover of Twilight on your head. I watched a lot of people fail at it, then Summer, Bri, and I made it look easy by walking to the end and all the way back. Yay for stickers and pins. Then we wandered the bookstore somemore.

At midnight they lined up us and started selling the books. I did indeed buy Breaking Dawn(can't beat $13 for new hardback really) in addition to Patricia Briggs' newest, Cry Wold, Patrick Rothfuss' The Name of the Wind, and a book which I am withholding naming until I down reading it and can decide if I want to defend it or not.

We went back to Summer's, minus Bridget, and started reading Breaking Dawn. I will share my thoughts on it in another post, because there are many thoughts. Lights went out at 3AM even though I wasn't done reading. I ended up barely dozing the whole night and didn't get any real sleep - I've gotten good at 'cat naps'. Alarm went off at nine thirty and we headed for the Bistro.

From there it was a pretty normal meeting, plus book snarking, though I had about four times more soda then I usual do. We also stayed later then we had been. We went to Tracy's afterwards for dinner and even more book snarking, and not just about Breaking Dawn either. After dinner we watched V for Vendetta on the new awesometastic projector that Tracy's family just put in. After the movie we talked some more, until we realized it was 2am and going home was probably a good idea.

After I got home I didn't get to sleep until 4am, and then I slept for nearly twelve hours. I woke up thirsty too - since Friday I'd drunk a regular sized vitaminwater, a giant vitaminwater, one of those huge smartwater bottle, and who knows how many refills of diet pepsi. I managed to eat breakfast and take a shower before mom got home from the dog show. I missed a call from Summer about a Friends of the Library used book sale, but then I got mom to take me out to meet them. For $7.50 I got ten books, most of them hard covers!

The hardback were Marion Zimmer Bradley's the Mists of Avalon, Jim Butcher's Captain's Fury and White Night, Stephen King's The Dead Zone(because I need to read some King damnit), and Robin McKinley's Deerskin. In paperback I got Ursula K. Le Guin's Orsinian Tales, J.R.R. Tolkien's the Hobbit, Scott Lynch's The Lies of Locke Lamora(because one of my favorite authors loves it), and a stranger little thing that caught my eye called The Unicorn Trade by Poul and Karen Anderson.

Once again to Tracy's for dinner. And then we played Mario Kart until we remembered that we had to be places and do things tomorrow. So here I am, back home and catching up with two days of internet.
